You Need This – Denim Jacket

After all those fitted blazers, boyfriend blazers and motorcycle jackets, denim jackets are back in our lives. Actually, I don’t think denim jackets have ever stayed far from fashion. I still wear one I bought in high school! Just like a pair of nice jeans, denim jackets go with many things in our wardrobe. They also are very versatile and help us express many styles. In them, we can appear sweet, edgy, tomboyish, and sharp. If you are in advertising, PR, television, design or a similar profession, you can definitely go to work in a denim jacket!

A jean jacket is very easy to wear, as long as you don’t pair it with other denims on your outfit. Although denim fabric is popular this season, I still don’t think it’s a practical idea to wear more than one major piece of denim per outfit. Other than that simple rule, feel free to pair it with your dresses, shorts, long pants, skirts, just about everything!

• Wear it with skinny pants and boots like Kate Moss or Rachel Bilson.

This is the sleek and urban look that most girls can pull it off easily. Put on your aviator sunglasses and grab your coolest handbag and you will attract a lot of attention easily. Some girls have trouble with tucking pants into their boots. If that’s how you feel, try the next look.

• Wear a jean jacket with cropped pants and flats like Jessica Alba or this ad for the Levi’s 2010 winter look.

This look is the classic example of “casual chic” style. It’s so simple it’s almost a no brainer. I like that Jessica Alba brings some bright colors to her look with her shoes and bag. They nicely accentuate what is otherwise a rather neutral-colored outfit.

When you want to look a little Californian, try this style. It is striking, yet comfortable. Flat sandals and bold jewelries are the best companions for it. You look like a star without even trying.

• Wear your denim jacket with a mini skirt like Nicky Hilton, Nicole Richie or Rachel Zoe.

Long sleeves on the top balance the shortness of the mini skirt on the bottom well and make the outfit perfect for early fall. Black tights or over-the-knee boots like Rachel Zoe’s will keep you warm. Wrap a scarf on your neck, not just for the warmth, but also for the accentuating colors, the fringe, and the fun it provides the outfit.

• Wear your jean jacket over a shiny party dress like Emma Roberts or Julia Jones.

If the party dress is so shiny or so tight that it makes you look aloof, then put a denim jacket on over it. The jacket will bring your look down to the earth. You will look chic, creative, easy going, and approachable. Push the sleeves up above your elbow if you can. This little touch makes the whole look fit better for that in-door occasion.

However, denim is a rustic fabric. So in general, I recommend you always wear one thing in these outfits that’s a designer brand to show that you actually care about high-end fashion, and the difference between a city girl and a real cowgirl. If shoes and handbags are too expensive to reach, maybe the sunglasses are easier to get.
